Dubai: Ilyas Hussain, 36, had no hope of seeing his parents anytime in the near future once he became conscious after multiple surgeries at a hospital in Dubai.

He had collapsed on the road and became unconscious and was brought to the hospital in an ambulance. Ilyas had suffered an acute ischemic stroke and underwent surgeries including the ones involving taking out and then keeping back a portion of his skull.

Having overstayed his visit visa for five months, his only chance of flying home without fines and a permanent ban became possible through the UAE visa amnesty programme. After being hospitalised for over a month, Ilyas became a beneficiary of the amnesty programme, thanks to the support of Praveen Kumar, a community volunteer associated with the medical committee of the Indian Consulate in Dubai.

Emotional reunion

“Ilyas was trying to get a job as a restaurant employee, but he could not secure a visa and ended up becoming an illegal visitor,” explained Praveen who took up the mission of repatriating Ilyas as advised by the mission.

He helped with the paper works once the doctors declared that Ilyas had partially recovered and was fit to travel. Praveen also accompanied Ilyas to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, where his parents from Uttar Pradesh received him.

“It was an emotional reunion as they were seeing their young, energetic son in a weak condition in a wheelchair. It was when his brothers’ kids hugged him that I saw a smile on the face of Ilyas for the first time since I met him,” recalled Praveen, who works as IT consultant in Dubai.
